Corporate Profile

A root, 25 years deep

Nearly two and half decades years ago, the Jhunjhunwala family began its relationship with the glass manufacturing industry, unaware of what the future beheld. In 1986 the then young Mr Sushil Jhunjhunwala, curious for things radically different and new, was enamoured by ‘opal glass’ on a foreign business trip. Being a visionary with an eye for innovation, the idea of opal tableware, travelled back with him, to India.

Originally, a French discovery, opal glass was considered rare and difficult to create. Though it was an arduous challenge, he won it with unwavering determination and commitment, and successfully introduced opal glass in India in 1988 under the brand ‘La Opala’, paving a new era in the tableware industry.

Growth, the way of life

We believe in keeping our fingers on the consumer’s pulse. And keeping with the rising demands, we leapt to the forefront of innovation with breakthrough products which helped shape the history of the Indian tableware market.

With every step, we realised that to grow and expand, we need to step outside the walls of the family business. So we went public in 1994. The confidence of the people rose, and the foresight and brand image were crafted to perfection, leading to a substantial over subscription.

By the end of 1996, while others grappled to understand the opalware industry, La Opala was paving ways on a road untravelled…handcrafted 24% Lead crystal glassware. To ensure further excellence, we collaborated with Doosan Glass Limited, South Korean experts in glass manufacturing and began a journey of crystallised finesse, unseen before.

Each of our achievements has outdone the last. Dedicated not only to our consumers but also the environment, in 2008 we started an eco friendly state-of-the-art, opal glass manufacturing facility at Uttarakhand that provides the technological edge in bringing fineness to our products.

Fostering a consolidated and consistent growth, today La Opala has gone beyond opal glassware to being perceived as a ‘Designer Collection’.

With an exquisite ensemble in the Diva Range starting with the Classique Collection to its Ivory Collection and culminating in, its premium ‘Designer Collection from Manish Malhotra’, every design arouses a lifestyle aspiration and adds to the signature style of exclusivity.

A leader in the Indian tableware market, our products are a favourite in countries like USA, UK, France, Turkey, Middle East and South East Asian countries.

A perfect corporate citizen

From delivering high quality products and sublime artistry to upholding commitments, the Company practices TQM parameters and was the first Indian company in opal glassware to be certified under ISO 9001, now upgraded to ISO 9001: 2008 standards. We view the ‘Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety’ as an important aspect of Integrated Management Systems, and are in the advanced stage of certification under ISO 14001:2004 -Environmental Management System, and OHSAS: 18001:2007 – Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

Awards

Having received the highly important ISO 9001-2000 certification and matched the standards of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) USA, we also received the ‘Udyog Ratna’ award conferred by the Government of Jharkhand. More accolades were won with Capexil’s ‘Most Outstanding Performer’ and ‘One Star Trading House’ status.

And this year we were honoured with not only the title of ‘Best Entity in Innovation in Business Model’ by the prestigious Economic Times Bengal Corporate Awards, but we also have been listed, out of 19 Indian companies, in the Top 200 Asian companies in Forbes Asia’s Best Under a Billion (BUB) list, from a pool of 15,000 stock traded companies in Asia Pacific with revenues between $5 million and $1 billion.

But it doesn’t end there. With our team of visionaries, dedicated towards the single goal of perfecting the art of opalware for 25 years, it still seems like we’ve only just begun.
